Manchester United were very much a strong force in English football during the 1965-66 season, the same season as England won the world cup. They finished off the season in great form in forth position and Bobby Charlton was in the form of his life. The following season, produced the best out of Manchester United, with the emergence of George Best and Bobby Charlton continuing to be a phenomenon for United, they comfortably won the league title, now making them the dominant force in English football. This in turn earned them a birth into the European Cup competition of the 1967-68 season. Sir Matt Busby’s side proved to be impossible to defeat during the competition, a run of great performances earned them a final tie against Portuguese champions, Benfica. United went onto win the match 4-1, including two goals by their prolific goal scorer, Bobby Charlton and the Reds were the European Champions. Their league form was impressive as well; however they narrowly lost out on defending their league title as they finished in second position.
The European Champions were not as successful the following season as they finished it in 11th place and Matt Busby left the post which proved to only be temporary later on.
Wilf McGuinness took charge of United in time of the 1969-70 season; however they struggled in all cup competitions and in the league as they finished 11th position.
