Manchester United, under the guidance of Matt Busby, had a glorious spell during the 1960’s and were looking for similar success in the coming years, however they struggled to emulate the same success over the next several years. Matt Busby’s side only managed to finish 8th in the first division during the 1970-71 season, despite boasting the legendary football players, George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton.
Matt Busby left the Manu UTD managerial post at the start of the 1971-72 campaign, with Frank O'Farrell taking over the managerial post; however his short spell was far from successful. Despite managing to finish a respectful 8th position, they were eliminated early in cup competitions and with the wealth of talent and their disposal it proved to be a disappointing season.
Tommy Docherty took over from O’Farrell in time for the 1972-73 campaign and this season proved to be a disaster for the Reds.
United’s league form was terrible as they finished the season in 18th position, lucky to avoid relegation. Many wondered why Tommy Docherty was still in charge and they were correct to question the manager by the end of the season. Manchester United completely crashed in the league as they were relegated, finishing in 21st position, by the end of the 1973-74 season. Only managing to win 10 league matches in comparison to losing 20.
Docherty however took charge of United during their second division campaign of 1974-75. They were always expected to take total control of the division and it came to no surprise as they ended the season in 2nd position, in turn resulting in promotion back to the top flight.
