The final of the 1983 league cup was a classic, after only twelve minutes, United’s Gordon McQueen played a lengthy ball from inside his own half to the edge of the Liverpool penalty box. Norman Whiteside controlled the ball well and slotted the ball just inside Bruce Grobbelaar’s left hand post for a great goal. Manchester united began to create more chances however the score line remained 1-0 by half time. The second half was played at a much faster tempo and with 15 minutes left, Craig Johnston squared the ball to Sammy lee, who played the ball to Alan Kennedy on the left. Kennedy played the ball forward and, from well outside the penalty box smashed the ball hard towards the far corner to equalize.
Liverpool substitute David Fairclough came on for Craig Johnston and started to take control in extra time. Ronnie Whelan scored a breathtaking goal in extra time and Liverpool were the winners of the ‘Milk Cup.’
Manchester United 3-0 Barcelona
Quarter Final ECWC – 1983
United had been beaten 2-0 in the first leg and Barcelona were favorites, however against the odds, this proved to be a memorable night for Manchester United. In the 22nd minute, Frank Stapleton forced a corner on the left. Ray Wilkins curled the kick into the heart of the goal area and Norman Whiteside headed it onto an unmarked Bryan Robson who scored with a decisive header. Five minutes into the second half and a suicidal back pass from Miguel Alonso handed possession to United. Remi Moses collected and crossed from the right and Robson met the ball and scored. Two minutes later, Frank Stapleton scored Uniteds third to cap off a great 3-0 victory.
