Louis Saha
Saha transferred to Fulham for £2.1 million in the summer of 2000 from Newcastle and spent a total of four years at Craven Cottage before moving to Old Trafford in January 2004 for £12.8 million. However Saha only managed to play 13 matches for Manchester United during his first season, scoring 7 goals. After a succession of injuries during the 2004-05 season, he missed most of that respective season and scored only two goals. Saha was the leading goal scorer in the league cup during the 2005-06 season and won the trophy with United.
Rio Ferdinand -
Ferdinand joined West Ham United as a junior and made his debut appearance for them at the tender age of 17. Due to his brilliant defensive displays for West Ham, it earned him a transfer to Leeds United for £18 million in November 2000. Ferdinand was England’s first choice centre back during the 2002 world cup finals. He produced brilliant performances during the 2002 world cup finals, he was solid at the heart of England’s defense in their famous 1-0 victory over Argentina, and he was outstanding against Sweden, Nigeria and Denmark. He scored England’s opening goal in their second round demolition of Denmark which they went onto win 3-0. Ferdinand’s exhilarating performances in the 2002 world cup finals earned him a move to Manchester United for a staggering £30 million which remains the highest ever transfer fee paid to a defender in the premiership. He helped Manchester United to winning the premiership title in the 2002/03 season and the F.A cup of the 2003/04 season. More success came about as he was an integral part of the Manchester United side which won the 2006 Carling Cup.
Wayne Rooney
Rooney made his debut for England in February 2003 against Australia in a 3-1 defeat. He has gained his momentum for England in a very short period of time. Despite not scoring in any of the qualifying matches of the 2006 world cup, he battled against injury to take part in the 2006 world cup; however a red card against Portugal did not help matters. Rooney spent two seasons playing in the premiership for Everton prior moving to Manchester United for an initial fee of £23million. He played an integral part for Manchester United over the past two seasons. He was voted England’s Young player of the year at the end of the 2004/2005 season. He is often paralleled to how Paul Gascoigne used to play his football. Rooney is regarded as having the potential as one of Uniteds greatest ever forwards.
Christiano Ronaldo
In August 2003, Alex Ferguson purchased Christiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon after playing for them for four years. He signed for a staggering £12.25 Million and has impressed ever since moving to Old Trafford. He was the ideal replacement for David Beckham after he left United for Real Madrid few weeks prior to Ronaldo’s arrival.
Ronaldo has won the FA Cup and League cup with United and put on some brilliant premiership displays for the Reds. Christiano Ronaldo scored two goals in Euro 2004, one coming from their first match against Greece and the other in a crucial semi- final tie against the Dutch. He has an abundance of pace and skill and uses it week in week out in the English premiership.
